SUNY Old Westbury Field Hospital

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, New York City faced an urgent need for additional hospital beds. In response, AECOM, serving as Design-Builder for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under a FEMA mission assignment, spearheaded the construction of a 1,024-bed Alternate Care Facility (ACF) on the campus of SUNY College at Old Westbury, Long Island. The C.A.C. team partnered with SLS to complete a critical portion of this emergency project. This fast-tracked, integrated design-build effort required construction to begin while the design was still being finalized. C.A.C. immediately mobilized, working around the clock to complete the project. Due to rigorous safety protocols, the entire workforce avoided COVID infections throughout the project. Construction was completed in just 28 days, with the first 104 beds delivered 12 hours ahead of schedule—only nine days after breaking ground. C.A.C. performed  all utility and underground infrastructure work for the emergency facility. In just 20 days, C.A.C. installed over 150,000 linear feet of underground utilities, including electric conduits, gas mains, water mains, and sewers, and well as performing paving work and site work. C.A.C.’s ability to mobilize quickly and execute underground work efficiently was a key factor in the project’s early completion, showcasing the company's commitment to excellence during a time of unprecedented need.
